Director's Note
When I was very young, my mom taught me that Valentine’s Day wasn’t just about romance. It was about appreciation—about celebrating the people who show up for you in the ordinary rhythms of life. That idea expanded my understanding of love. It wasn’t just about what you feel; it was about how we choose to honor and treat the people standing right in front of us.
And how we treat one another often begins in a single moment—when two imperfect histories—stories, scars, assumptions, expectations—meet face to face. In First Date, that baggage doesn’t stay hidden. It spills out—sometimes awkwardly, sometimes hilariously—and almost always meets judgment—both from the other person and from the chorus of voices inside their own minds.
The instinct to judge is natural. It protects us. But we’ve become exceptionally skilled at using it beyond survival—sometimes to the point of isolating ourselves in the process.
What if we approached one another differently? What if, instead of reacting with judgment, we chose curiosity? What if we paused long enough to ask, “Where is this coming from?” instead of defining the person in front of us by a single moment of their story—while quietly letting it define us in return?
Curiosity softens defensiveness. It creates space. And in that space, connection becomes possible.
Over time, I have come to understand that love isn’t about a perfect, magical feeling; it’s about respect. When two imperfect histories collide, what remains is how we choose to treat each other. Choosing to honor someone fully—the Great, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly—is where both romantic and platonic love begin to take root.
This performance marks the third year in a row that the Longmont Museum has invited us to provide Valentine’s Day–themed entertainment, and that invitation feels like both an honor and a responsibility. Offering First Date feels fitting—not because it’s a perfect love story, but because it’s not. It’s an honest one. It’s awkward. It’s brave. And it asks us to try anyway.
In the end, this isn’t just a story about two people on a date. It’s an invitation to replace judgment with curiosity. To love more openly and generously—even when it’s awkward, even when it’s hard.
Thank you for being here. I hope something tonight stays with you.
Best wishes,
Heather

Katie McManus
(Casey) Katie is thrilled to reprise her role as Casey after mounting First Date with Coal Creek Theater of Louisville last year. Before COVID, she pounded the pavement in New York City, performing Off-Broadway in such roles as Sister James in Doubt, a Parable and Ariel in The Tempest. She trained at the Actors Studio Drama School, where she received her MFA in Acting. When not telling stories on stage, her "real person" job is telling stories as a digital marketer. In her spare time, she enjoys crocheting lopsided blankets, petting all the dogs, blowing her money at farmer's markets and waking up at 4:00AM to watch F1 races. Her family is the reason she's here today. Love and green light.
Michael J Martinkus
(Aaron) Michael J. Martinkus: Mike is thrilled to remount this show with :11After, after having done it last year with CCTL and winning Best Actor. His recent credits include Frank in Witch (:11After), Bank Manager in Once (Town Hall), Reg in The Full Monty (Miner’s Alley), Mr. Wormwood in Matilda (Town Hall Arts Center), and Nicky/Trekkie Monster in Avenue Q (Miner’s Alley). No stranger to the other side of the footlights, he has directed productions of Tuck Everlasting (Vintage), A Tuna Christmas (LTC) and Disney's Beauty And The Beast (ArtsHub). Thanks to this ridiculously talented cast and creative team. All my love to Sarah, Devon & Riley for their love and support. Thanks to you for supporting live local theater. Here's hoping you've found or will find "the one"!

Her first role at age 5 was Chip the Cup in Beauty and the Beast. Michele has been a licensed sonographer for 10 years. Originally from Oklahoma, she has lived on both coasts in NY and CA. She loves to travel and spend time outdoors. She can always be found at the gym or spending time with her dog, Chesty.

The Revolutionsts
Paris, 1793. The French Revolution's Reign of Terror is in full swing, and four women are trying to figure out how to change the world. They've got big ideas about art, activism, feminism, and legacy. They've also got guillotines to worry about. It's a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection that ends in a song and a scaffold.
